Isn’t the problem of these films never winning just due to the actual critics voting that they simply haven’t watched them to even consider them for a vote? I act silly have no idea how the process works, are the voters required to watch every single film that is nominated?

No they don’t have to. They’re just encouraged to. Have a look back at what some of the jurors were saying about The Tale of Princess Kaguya and Song of the Sea when compared to Big Hero 6. It’s clear most of them didn’t watch them.

He said Chinese freaking things nobody watch. They have no respect over animations and worse if they are from other countries or not 3D.

Wasn’t comitee trying to make them aatch everything this year?

In theory, the voters are supposed to watch every movie in the category they are voting on.

Unfortunately, some voters have admitted in the past that for the animation category specifically, they just don’t do it. They vote for whatever one their grandkids said they liked the most since “cartoons are for kids”.

Then there’s just internal Hollywood politicking as well. For a movie to do well at the Oscars it generally has to hold a “for your consideration” campaign to “inform” voters of why they should vote for their movie. This campaign often involves invitations to big expensive parties (So it’s not bribery per say, but a rose by any other name). And sometimes voters will just vote for movies that their friends are in.

These campaigns can be expensive, and Japanese studios historically don’t care to throw that much money at Hollywood big wigs. And even if they did, these studios don’t have the kind of money the big American studios do.

They also have fewer connections in Hollywood, so its less likely that the director or producers of the movie can call up voters directly and ask for votes.

The result is historically in the animation category, Disney/Pixar or Dreamworks takes home the prize most years.

Another thing is that sometimes the films that get nominated are ones with a limited release, and thus that so many people have not heard of.

Theres voting? I thought the highest bid wins for the majority of these awards

Before, they don’t have to watch everything. Now they’re forced to. This is a new rule that they just recently enforced that idk why wasn’t that a rule since the start.

Yeah, it’s kind of an open secret that the voting members of the Academy do not watch all or even most of the animated feature nominees. This compounds the effect that the typical process of actually getting consideration from them has, because first you have to campaign to have them considered, and THEN you have to hope they actually watch the damn thing.

That’s why most of the time the best animated feature doesn’t win. It will be whatever Disney or Dreamworks released that year if it looks half decent in marketing. They gave it to Spirited Away once, of course, which propelled Ghibli into mainstream popularity. But anime rarely gets a nod outside of being nominated.

I do want to see Chainsawman win even though it wouldn’t mean anything, but only because I think it would make the creators happy.

To be fair it sounds like the same problem with anyone who does even an anime awards show or award shows in general, I don’t really blame the critics for not having the time to watch every single thing, since even with anime awards shows that is pretty much the same

I fail to see how any of those will beat “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants”.

SpongeBob big guy pants ok

At first I thought you’re joking with such title.
But then I googled.

You made my day XD

Not seen the film, hope they found the square pants.

This. So much this!

Big PantsTM will never let it happen.

Miku movie mentioned lets gooooo!

Pretty sure Kpdh will sweep but I’ll take it!

I’d like to see KDH winning it but I can imagine Disney will try to aggressively push Zootopia.

They really don’t like losing ‘Best Animated Feature’, like when Spider-Verse beat Ralph Breaks the Internet, but they had already sent standees to stores before the event with a label celebrating Ralph winning the Oscar lol

It really goes to show how that award was usually given to Disney by default when they jumped the gun like that with Ralph Breaks the Internet. Don’t get me wrong, fine movie in its own right but not really the kind of masterpiece you’d think would be a shoe-in to win.

Be that confident with Coco, WALL-E or other such genuinely special pieces of animation history but not with Ralph Breaks the Internet. Thankfully Disney has actually had to work for it recently, with them being on a 3 year losing streak in the category which had never happened before.

Has anyone outside of Japan actually seen ChaO?

No, I don’t even know who distributed the movie. I don’t think has not even released in North America Market.
