I love seeing Sakamoto so high after all the complaints about the first part’s animation.

It’s a really fun series.

海外のナナシさん

Been thinking about watching it. Is it complete with second part or they doing third part?

海外のナナシさん

Season 1 is divided in part 1 and 2 so thats finished but the story is not over yet and will continue with a season 2 which had been confirmed.

海外のナナシさん

Yeah, season 2 finished a few weeks ago. I think they’re working on season 3 but I’m not certain.

Edit: the first full length season is split in two, and each part has its own theme song so I counted them separately originally. The next season will be season 2 part 1. -_-

海外のナナシさん

The manga is still on-going, but probably not for much longer.

海外のナナシさん

wtf I missed seeing that and watched it late, there were complaints? Didn’t notice but I guess I was distracted by how damn fun and enjoyable the show was anyways lmao

海外のナナシさん

Complaints came from Manga readers since Sakamoto Days manga has some of the best action choreography in manga medium. You can go ahead and see how good the action is in the manga. But watching anime you never feel that the action here is something “special”.

The manga readers wanted an anime adaptation that went above and beyond like what JJK, CSM or Dandadan had. They wanted something where animators went absolutely batshit crazy with creativity and extended fights.

But Sakadays adaptation was only “good”, it didn’t do anything “above and beyond”, it just followed the manga bar for bar even during action scenes and even those really didn’t do the manga’s action choreography justice. It was missing the “cool” factor that was present in the manga.

海外のナナシさん

Me too, it’s so good. Fuck the haters.

海外のナナシさん

Most of the soo called “haters” were manga readers who were simply upset that they didn’t get an adaptation that went “above and beyond” elevating the source material to another level like JJK, CSM or Dandadan.

While a bit unfair yes, Sakamoto days is a Weekly Shonen jump manga and it’s main selling point is it’s action choreography. Anime while being “decent/good”, didn’t even came close to replicating the insane action choreography and “cool” factor of the manga. The fans wanted something where animators went absolutely batshit crazy with creativity and extended fights.

Sad to see Fragrant Flower didn’t crack the top 5. I wonder how much it got hurt by the massive delayed launch outside Asia.

海外のナナシさん

I’m glad to see My Melody & Kuromi on this list. It was my surprise hit of last year and maybe its success will mean a second season.

For anyone who hasn’t seen it, it’s cute, wholesome, and extremely well-made stop-motion animation with an actual thought-provoking story and a touch of existential dread that Sanrio has gotten so good at telling.

海外のナナシさん

That’s also quite the audience for My Melody & Kuromi! But when compared to other non anime shows of Netflix they still do pale in comparison.

海外のナナシさん

I’m most interested in how it says that anime represented 4% of all viewing. Seems wild when the top anime are an order of magnitude below the other top properties, but I guess Netflix has a deep library of anime at this point.

海外のナナシさん

Especially since compared to the usual slop shows on Netflix a season of anime has less than half the runtime, which means half as many hours watched (the metric streamers care about) by default

海外のナナシさん

Doesn’t that sound about right, then? 4% is not a lot.

海外のナナシさん

4% isn’t a ton, but just comparing against everything else that they show, anime is way lower. Of course we don’t have a comprehensive list of everything so it’s hard to make super meaningful statements, but seeing the numbers for the stuff at the top (especially since it’s hard to gauge if “viewing” here is meant in total time or total views) but seeing the comparison to other media at the top end I’d have definitely assumed even less than 4%.

Edit: Huh, they have a more comprehensive document attached (literally thousands of items). Might dig through it.

海外のナナシさん

Doesn’t seem strange to me. Anime and manga can sometimes get live action adaptations, precisely because they’re attempting to capture something of the mainstream market. And if we cast our net wider to include non-Japanese animation, Kpop Demon Hunters surpassed many shows.

海外のナナシさん

I’m not referring to the specific popularity of anime in a broad sense. I’m looking at the raw data that they’ve provided for the most popular content and saying “based on these it feels unlikely it would be that high”. But I’ll spend the weekend going over the full dataset and see what we get.

海外のナナシさん

Well the data is just viewership right? I’m pretty sure there is a lot of overlap between Wednesday and Dandadan viewers, for example.

海外のナナシさん

I’m happy that my favorite ongoing shonen anime (barring One Piece) is at the top. Good job everyone!

海外のナナシさん

The gyaru revolution continues.

海外のナナシさん

Coming off the heels of the manga being one of the winners of the 71st Shogakukan Manga Awards (one of the most prestigious awards for manga), DanDaDan just keeps winning and winning. Congratulations to Tatsu and Science SARU again 🎉🎉🎉

海外のナナシさん

lol makes me laugh cause all the weird new anime fans complaining about Momo getting attacked by aliens and cultists makes Dan Da Dan an anime for degenerates. Such a good anime, glad many others are enjoying it as well.

海外のナナシさん

It’s a very strange mindset that people have where a bad thing happens to a character (the scene really is not sexualized as well) and people try to make it out like it’s glorifying the act

海外のナナシさん

And for people complaining about that scene, there’s no logic in what they’re saying either. The point of the scene is to create revulsion for the antagonists, and draw a parallel to ‘real world’ alien abductions and the meme of cosmic travelers coming to Earth to anally probe humans lol.

The problem is that in the minds of some people, every moment of nudity or explicitness is either overtly or covertly just porn for anime viewers. In their minds, all anime watchers are degenerates in the first place. It’s just never worth it placating such mindsets.

海外のナナシさん

How many people did you see voice that specific opinion?

You can be grossed out by those scenes (like I am) without projecting that onto other people, and I’m gonna guess that it’s the majority of people who would prefer if those scenes weren’t there.

Personally I’m still happy the series is doing well though. With or without these scenes, there’s so much to appreciate about Dandadan

海外のナナシさん

About the same amount of time I’ve recommended it to newbs.

“Dandadan isn’t an anime that you should recommend to newcomers.”
“You shouldn’t be recommending Dandadan to newbies.”

So around ~200 times since Dandadan first aired. I think it’s an amazing first anime.

And my post also gets negative karma, so it’s not just one person either.

海外のナナシさん

I’ve seen it many times on threads/posts that mention Dan Da Dan on this sub. I get not liking an anime genre or subject matter. I personally refuse to watch Grave of the Fireflies or Made In the Abyss. Yet these types constantly complain about an anime they either didn’t watch or hate watched that it’s a bit obnoxious.
