Defend itself against what? Taiwan and Japan aren’t invading anyone. It’s not on the table. Defend yourself against other countries that are defending against you?

By their twisted logic, Japanese military coming to aid Taiwan, is tantamount to Japan aiding Chinese insurrectionists “in China”. I think people are just waiting/hoping that China finds something else to fixate on.
