Shibuya Ward cancels New Year countdown event; security to be tightened

Japan the past few months: “No fun! No foreigners! The beatings will continue until the GDP and birthrate rises!”

I’m waiting for the seniors to start complaining about horrific devaluation of the yen, inflation, as well as pension cuts.

No young people enjoying life, spending money, paying taxes? No comfy retirement. We’ll have to make a Japanese LeopardsAteMyFace sub-reddit.

im sure cancelling public events where large amounts of people gather and socialize (and get drunk) is going to be amazing for birthrates. incredible work japan

to be fair to them shibuya is still a hellhole of people even without these events happening 😗

Probably gonna suggest some kinda co-prosperity zone in Asia next.

Where the fun stuff in Tokyo now?

New York has a ball drop. The fact that Tokyo can’t muster up a decent event is crazy. Halloween, I kinda understand. New years? WTF?

no you don’t understand, countdowns and public gathering are 迷惑 behavior from 外国 (/s)

Technically, there’s no shortage of countdowns and public gatherings in Japan on NYE and many of them are televised. Just they happen at the shrines and not in the city center.

NYE isn’t traditionally a party night in Japan, and Shibuya Countdown only became a thing (Crossing pedestrianised with a countdown on the screen) for 2016-17. So it’s not too unusual not to have one here.

In Shibuya’s case, NYE and Halloween are big money losers for the local government, because people show up to hang around on the street and then go home. Other cities with more space can at least recoup some of the hosting expense through paid viewing areas, food and drink stalls etc., none of which will fit in Shibuya Crossing.

all those people are spending money in restaurants and bars. which is ultimately good for the local government even if they don’t directly get tax revenue. what is good for local business is good for them

on that note, I wonder what the local business orgs think about these rules

right? especially if many of those businesses were relying on and expecting the upcoming festivities to balance out their books

You can tell not many people here are familiar with how New Years is celebrated in Japan. It’s just like Christmas Eve and Day in the west where people celebrate it at home with the family. Most people get the 31st off and many people travel out of Tokyo to where their parents and grandparents live. Countdown parties aren’t much of a thing unless you include special TV concerts or going to the temple with your relatives to listen to the bells ring.

Right.

It’s absurd how many foreigners here are touting for a western New Year’s Eve public outing when being with family or at a shrine is the traditional custom for Japanese citizens

On the other hand, at the same time they’re increasing security, so it’s still going to be a money loser, but without the people.

But losing comparatively less money

What? Do you think the businesses are closed because there are too many people? Everyone is buying food and drinks when they go out, most people don’t go inside anywhere because everywhere fills up… How do they lose money???

When has not being able to monetize something ever been a problem in this country?

New year in Japan is closer to Chinese new year, just aligned with the western calendar. It’s a time to go back to your hometown and see relatives. It’s not about mustering up anything to be like New York or anywhere else. It’s a different event, celebrated differently,

I used to live in Hells Kitchen for 10 years. Times Square NYE is a massive cluster and most of the neighbors bolt out of town

NYPD deploys 2000 officers alone for an area of 10 blocks. Of all the yearly outdoor events in NYC, New Years is by far the biggest drain on city resources and draws all the crazies from tri-state. You don’t want that

If they didn’t want to do it they’d deploy rubber bullets and tier gas. Hell, what am I saying it’s America, they’d just start shooting people who tried to celebrate. Have the national guard send people to ICE facilities or something.

New York obviously wants it to happen, otherwise it wouldn’t. There must be some benefit…

There’s no point. No incentive. Just people getting drunk and making a mess. I support this decision. The tourist numbers are crazy everywhere now. Wasnt like this 5 years ago

Yeah but the ball drop in New York stinks. You literally have to stand there for 18+ hours and no access to bathrooms. People literally use diapers to wait for a ball to drop
