There is nowhere that Tiktok, Instagram and YT influencers can’t ruin.

I remember when I moved here and there was almost no tourism. You could spend days in Tokyo without seeing any foreigner outside of Roppongi or Shibuya. It’s crazy what social media and trends can do when you think about it!

Ya I lived here 15 years ago and worked in central Tokyo. I would go a whole day without seeing a white guy.

Now I see a white guy every minute walking in Tokyo lol. Wildly different era now.

Oh wow the horror

When was this?

He said 15 years ago, so 2011 I suppose.

I also lived in Tokyo 2008/9 and agree, very few foreigners aside from Shibuya/Roppongi. Harajuku on weekday? Almost none. Weekend? maybe 5% of Takeshita Dori (I used to be the every Sunday Harajuku bridge girl. Foreigners would come to take photos and then walk back to Shibuya)

I went back to my country for uni and came back to Tokyo in 2014. Hell, was I shocked. 1/3 more foreigners compares to just a couple of years back.

Now I‘ve been here for 12 years and it‘s getting out of hand ever since Covid passed. Tourists don‘t care about manners any more (thanks to influencers who started this trend), and we foreign residents get the backlash aka foreigners can never follow rules, must strip of rights.

As a frequent visitor who’s been to Japan every year between 2017-2025 (except 2020-2021 due to COVID) and spent a full year there between mid 2022 and mid 2023, even the difference between 2017 and 2019 was stark…

My first experience in Japan was July 2005, visiting a penfriend living in Mie…

I lived in Japan between 2011 and 2012, visited a friend briefly in 2019 and I really want to return…

2010 for a month, then back since January 2014 exactly like the guy below…

It’s crazy what devaluing your currency by half can do you mean ?

I often see this as a reason for the boom in tourism, but trust me Japan was cheaper as well…

Smartphones definitely were a game changer…

No one is saying it’s not more expensive in local currency terms…

Japan has always been popular. But in the past, the country had extremely strict restrictions…

Maybe. I think it mostly has to do with not being able to communicate…

I think Japan has always been popular…

Great for tourists, bad for everyone having to work here.

All I’m saying is if you don’t have a tourism-facing side hustle going, you are missing out big time…

Historically weak Yen has a role to play in this as well.

I remember when you barely even saw non asian people in Shibuya lol

According to the director of the World Travel Index the weak yen is a major reason, “The current weakness of the yen is a massive factor,”. However, with a stronger Yen Japan would still be in the Top 5.

Yep the line was heading to the sky before COVID and the yen falloff, and the current line is pretty much continuing the exact same trajectory.

Nowhere is it more indicative if you just compare common letter rates: In 2010 the US basic letter rate was 44 cents. Now it’s 78 cents In 2010 the Japan basic letter rate was 80-90 yen ( around $1 usd), today it is 110 yen ( or about $0.71) Japan used to be expensive but now it’s much cheaper for most foreigners which is why you see the surge in last 3-4 years

I’m currently visiting Japan. I noticed in Tokyo we would barely see any caucasians these past few days…

When I went to Japan I noticed that the numbers of other white people rapidly decreased after a certain amount of walking (even in Tokyo) or train connections.

What’s weird is even with all the tourism, the accommodations aren’t even that expensive…

I miss COVID. The pandemic was so much more relaxing. I say that with no offense to anyone who had misfortune. Just my experience during those years.
