Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance has been added to Nintendo Switch Online (Trailer)

Time for people to experience one of, if not the best games in the series.
Not the most difficult, but it’s such a rock solid tactics game.
Characters and world building are definitely up there as well.

What I’d love to see is Radiant Dawn once we get Wii games on the Switch 2, IF that’ll ever happen.
Being able to transfer data seamlessly from Path of Radiance to Radiant Dawn would be nice.
Tried doing it with emulation many years ago and it was such a hassle.

海外のナナシさん

I’m strongly of the opinion that Path of Radiance is the best Fire Emblem story

海外のナナシさん

My favorite thing about both Radiance games is how much they truly feel like a continent-wide war story.
While obviously the war expands in Radiant Dawn, even in PoR when things start popping off there’s a lot more discussion of troop movements and such.

Ike’s personal story is also top tier stuff.

海外のナナシさん

Yeah – it’s for this reason alone while I do mostly like Three Houses …
any one story feels like the cliffnotes version of the actual story,
and it’s not like doing all the routes is the “full story” –
you just get to fill in the blanks of the lore and history from a different perspective.

海外のナナシさん

Call me an elitist, but pretty much every fire emblem game has a bad story other than por and radiant dawn,
at least from what I’ve played (GBA and beyond).

The characters are at usually good enough to keep me invested though,
and of course I love the gameplay for all them to death.
But you can only stomach so much “evil dragon boss” before it gets boring.

海外のナナシさん

I feel like Radiance games do a better job than even the more recent 3d games because they do a good job contextualizing a lot of the world outside the direct points of view of the main characters.
You see a good handful of scenes showing the relevant armies fighting and the politicking. RD has different party/faction dynamics.

Sure, at the end of the day its still the main strike force being the progressive force of the plot but there is more going on adjacent to the main cast than most other Fire emblem games

海外のナナシさん

If someone is coming from FFT, or tactics ogre, it’s the one I would recommend as being the closest in story quality to those games

海外のナナシさん

I played it for a dozen hours and narratively it’s completely dull in comparison to FFT, Tactics Ogre, Growlanser, etc.
By Fire Emblem standards it was decent but that’s not saying much.

海外のナナシさん

Agreed, it doesn’t feel like animey (granted it’s been about 15 years since I last played it, so I’ve likely forgotten some story elements) or bloated like most modern Fire Emblem titles – it knows what it wants to do and does it, whilst still ensuring character development.

I’m also nostalgic as it reminds me of a pre-internet everywhere age – mostly due to Stefan, someone who you’ve got no hope of otherwise finding.

I wish Nintendo would take a leaf out of Square Enix’s book – Fire Emblem 7, 8, 9 and 10 all deserve remakes to make them accessible to a wider audience, not to mention Fire Emblem 3, 4, 5 & 6 still being officially untranslated and unavailable to the West!

海外のナナシさん

I recently replayed it for the first time in ~10 years, and even knowing what happens, I had a hard time putting it down since I was still really excited for what was going to happen next.
The story and world building are both great, and the execution equally so, I had forgotten how well written the dialog was.
I’d also argue we live in a time where this story is as relevant as it ever was.

The only shame is that there’s a hard cap on the number of supports a unit can have, so you’re not going to get to experience all of the conversations in one run.
That, and the voice acting in the few cutscenes there are is atrocious.

海外のナナシさん

Of the English translated games i’d agree but I do think Geneaology of the Holy War and Thracia 776 have better stories (and Thracia has particularly awesome gameplay/story integration).
Radiant Dawn’s story is also notoriously kinda bad which does let down the POR side a bit.

海外のナナシさん

I just recently went from PoR to RD on my steam deck with dolphin and it was actually super easy.
Didn’t have to do anything, dolphin saw my PoR save and imported it right over.

海外のナナシさん

I’ve never played a Fire Emblem game before, you think its alright to jump into this one blind, or should I at least either play a particular game before this one?

海外のナナシさん

Probably one of the best to jump into blind.
Basically it’s own setting between this one and the Wii version, so no prior knowledge required.
Like I said, it’s also not as difficult as some of the other entries, so you’d be fine with this.

海外のナナシさん

Sweet I appreciate the insight!
I’ve been wanting to jump into the series for awhile so looks like its time.

海外のナナシさん

Hope you enjoy it!

海外のナナシさん

PoR was my first FE game back in the day and I knew nothing about the series at that point.

It’s a perfect starting entry, though the enemy phase is going to feel like a product of its time.

海外のナナシさん

Almost all Fire Emblem games are completely standalone.
There are a couple of direct sequels, but they’re rare (and PoR is one of the few to get a sequel in Radiant Dawn).

海外のナナシさん

Just do yourself a favor, and look up what the recruitable characters are.

They are VERY easy to miss in this game.

海外のナナシさん

Sadly with the way Nintendo currently handles cross game compatibility (they dont),
I doubt the save bonuses would work

海外のナナシさん

They have alternate versions of games.
Idk what cross save stuff there is, but would it be possibly to have 1 version that simulates the cross save stuff?
Or is it like choice stuff that would be impossible to do for everyone.

海外のナナシさん

Its mainly character specific things.
Basically if you max out a stat and depending on your weapon level in POR characters in RD get a starting boost depending on what you personally max out.
It leads to some characters being extremely good due to those transfer bonuses.

There’s also some minor bonuses like support convos transferring over, characters with a maxed bond getting bonus crit chance when next to each other and exclusive dialogue.

So its technically possible to just make a version where everyone has the max stat bonuses but imo that loses the charm of building up your chatacter in POR and seeing it pay off on RD,
but that’s still a better option than not having it at all.

What I’d love to see is Radiant Dawn once we get Wii games on the Switch 2

Radiant Dawn was my first FE game and I’d love to see it again.

海外のナナシさん

Been looking forward to trying this game for years. Second hand market prices for this game have been ABSURD, haha

海外のナナシさん

About ten years ago I was on some real hard times financially speaking and liquidated my physical games collection. Luckily child me took impeccable care of my stuff; my complete-in-box copies of Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn paid a hefty chunk of bills that month.

海外のナナシさん

I wonder if the English version will be locked out of getting Manic mode again.

That always ticked me off.

海外のナナシさん

Honestly speaking maniac mode is just bullshit. Its difficulty comes from unfairness.

海外のナナシさん

My favourite FE game, simplicity and poor difficulty porting aside.
It does so many things right that wasn’t seen in the series since four entries prior.
Still the favourite day one release purchase of my life.
Nothing can compare to the excitement I felt when I first played it.

海外のナナシさん

I picked it up for $24.99 at GameStop a few months after its release.
Still have that sticker on the front cover.
Used to replay it every 2-3 years on the Wii, but that broke ages ago.
Might be time to give it a go again.

海外のナナシさん

Definitely. It’s one of those games I can pick up again every other year
and still feel like it’s a fresh experience.
All the design, sound and gameplay elements are so intrinsically intervowen
that you can really feel how the developers fell in love with making it.

海外のナナシさん

Oh fantastic, I was an odd one out and played Radiant Dawn but no Path of Radiance.
I was hoping for a remastered compilation but this will do!

海外のナナシさん

Daily reminder of that Smash Bros has like 20 Fire Emblem characters
but none of them are Black Knight…

海外のナナシさん

He’s an assist trophy, a mii costume, and shows up in the background of Ike’s stage.
That’s three more roles in Smash than a lot of other characters got.
