Eh I dunno, I know it is popular but genshin impact was not something that gripped me.
I guess that for people that enjoy the way free to play gameplay ends up being it is good, but it did not appeal to me.
Maybe it gets better later, who knows.
Some of the best games I have played in the last few years are from Japan.

You are not the target, but those games are cash machine.
If they can use a huge amount of people to develop their games it’s because they already have a huge amount of cash, and they know they will make more if they stay ahead.
Those games are basically gacha games in a very convincing JRPG clothes.
Gambling as always made a lot of money.

Would rather have quality over quantity any day.

You talking about the same quality that Pokemon has been releasing?

Genshin Impact turned into a top notch product now.
Far more content, pretty much all for free, than most games.

Literally anyone can just download it and have like 600 hours of story and open world content.
Of course how good both those things are is subjective but they put a lot of effort into the game and have kept it up for years.
Imo the open world is still beautiful, and the story, while dull at times, has its moments.
For an aging game, not too bad!

600 hours? Those are rookie numbers.
I’ve been playing it for free for the year and a half.
Probably 2-3k hours or more.

even on quality, japan hasn’t really kept up when it comes to these mobile games.
even some of the biggest company like SE makes terrible mobile games that end up failing shortly after launch.

Nobody can reproduce Chinese level of anything as long as governments and/or companies have a little bit of decency and regulations, not being supported by state.
Which is a good thing for workers.

Yeah the corporate practices of Japan are famously humane.

Did you read the article?
One reason why games in China are so strong is because they are made in an environment which allows for hiring a large number of personnel who can work long hours.

Company dependent but Japan can be that bad as well, the bureaucracy issues are the real hold up.
So hard to get anything through and makes things really fucking slow.
Every tiny thing needs to go through countless approvals and keeps things too narrow.

Well it’s still better than 996

It’s not the 90s anymore.
It’s still there but There’s also an ongoing change.
Thanks mostly to public pressure and the Gen Z’s new perspective

Looking at Fromsoft, pumping out Elden Ring, Armored Core, SOTE, Duskblood, and Nightreign.

Honestly, if they want to, they could. But their way of making a game is not based on MTX and live service, so that wouldn’t happen.

And most of Mihoyo’s flagship games are stalling/dragging and gatekeeping their player.

A big part of why these Chinese devs finally managed to break into the global market was because they started setting up studios outside of China to get away from too much government interference in their business.

It’s the same in Japan too. Cry about the CCP all you want, but Japanese game devs’ problems are because they’re too insular, not because of whatever weird political bogeyman the reddit brain geniuses want to cook up.

Square’s success is all because they took the rest of the world seriously; look at where Konami is now compared to where Kojima is without them; etc etc

Unless you’re a highway. then you really want some deficit printing and guardrails. Literal guardrails, not legal ones but I’m also in favor of those and any amount of oversight that is best for that specific type of commodity’s flourishing.
and most importantly, oversight that benefits the people surrounding the commodity like users and workers.

Japanese workers were often labeled ‘economic animals’.

They need to embrace more evolution and competition.

Yeah, they can’t, but they also don’t have to to make successful games.

Won’t stop JP studios like SE try to make the next gacha
