Visualizing Anime Studio Ownership [2025]
byu/Severe_Working_5934 inanime

MAPPA?

I was JUST about to ask

Indipendent

I like how few people know that Sega has been present in the anime industry for decades and have been making anime with TMS Telecom.

Also Studio Bind is owned by Egg Firm and White Fox

The ownership there is kind of a nightmare to untangle, especially now (Bind I mean), so I can see why they would skip it.

Sega (under TMS) also owns Marza Animation Planet Inc., which animated the Lupin III: The First film and also has provided CGI in the Sonic The Hedgehog film series (including revamping Sonic’s design in the first film after the initial design was heavily criticized after the first trailer).

also have been manufacturing anime merch for UFO catchers since like the freaking 80s/90s. As a massive SEGA nerd, I remember getting the End of Evangelion Laserdisc back in the 90s and seeing the SEGA logo in the beginning and my mind was blown.

I kinda forgot about Bind, Now that WhiteFox is fully owned by AlphaPolis, I Wonder if now part of Bind is in control of AlphaPolis or it was not included in the deal, and WhiteFox founder retains that share.

This is very interesting, thank you.

I find it very interesting that some of the studios with the most outstanding productions in the industry are independent: Kyoto Animation, Ufotable, and Bones.

When you’re independent you get to “choose” in what you want to work. Not the case if you’re a subsidiary.

It’s worth mentioning that this list only includes the main studios; there are also support studios that assist in the production of the anime.

For example, I know that Kadokawa owns Studio KADAN, a 3DCGI studio, RagingBull, which appears to be a 2D animation support studio, and the Chiptune studio for compositing, 3DCGI coloring.

Yeah forgot about Chiptune, and there are many support studios also. I mainly added those who are prime contractor/main studios.

You could add Nippon Television (NTV) owning Studio Ghibli. NTV owns a plurarity 43% stake in Ghibli and NTV Executive Board Member Fukuda Hiroyuki is the chairman (taking over for Miyazaki in 2023), although apparently there’s a strict business/creative split at Ghibli and the Ghibli team retains full creatize control, with NTV handling distribution and marketing.

It’s actually a point of annoyance for Japanese people because Ghibli films are available for streaming pretty much everywhere in the world… except Japan. Ghibli films are big ratings hits for NTV when they run them in broadcasts so apparently NTV is reluctant to license Ghibli films in Japan to streamers, and NTV hasn’t made its own streaming business… so there’s literally no legal way to watch Ghibli films in Japan unless you want to buy a physical BR/DVD (which increasingly Japanese people don’t own), or you have to wait for a broadcast, which feels insane in this day and age.

the only country that can’t easily stream Ghibli is the one that made it

Nippon TV does own Hulu Japan (which operates independent of Hulu US and Disney), which does stream some content from NTV.

Ghibli did withheld streaming and digital rights from its overseas partners till 2019/2020. Then GKIDS was able to sell Ghibli films on digital sell through platforms and license streaming rights to HBO Max (US) and Netflix (Canada). Goodfellas (formerly Wild Bunch International) licenses the streaming rights of Ghibli films to Netflix in the rest of the world.

It’s included in the first image, between madhouse and tatsunoko

Im more surprised Toei doesn’t have any other companies under them to be fair.

They do have various locations outside of Japan, they’re just not listed here.
