Japan’s Super Sentai superhero franchise is coming to an end after 50 years

I heard that it’s rumored that this is apparently a rebrand attempt so that they can escape some of the international licensing issues they’ve had.

This makes sense. Other childhood franchises I’ve loved, like Macross, entered into licensing Hell because of the deals they made way back when. If they can rebrand to avoid that, especially since Japanese media has been in the international spotlight in recent years, it’ll be better for them in the long run.

In the case of Macross, Harmony Gold was weak enough to bend the knee and accept that yes post-SDFM macross exists and they cannot interfere with overseas releases of it. There was no need to rebrand Macross to escape licensing issues with HG. This is not the case with Hasbro, as they’re a far larger entity.

I wanted to let everyone know: TV Asahi or Toei has neither officially announced that it is ending or it is a rebranding attempting and everything out there has been rumored by major news outlets by oricon and Kyodo. Unfortunately JP fans and legendary production actors, vets, and even singers are taking this at face value and the international fans are digging up past discussions and interviews to determine that this is actually a rebrand, but until Toei takes a step, we will know the truth.

The day I learned that the fight scenes from Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers were from this Japanese show, it blew my mind and explained so much.

Hasbro holds the exclusive international distribution/usage rights to Super Sentai […] Better for them to “end” on a big anniversary and start something new/similar that can target a wider audience.

Ah, they’ll always have Hentai Kamen!

Hero who isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty!

hi, coming over from the Sentai sub: this is not true. or at least, we don’t know if it is for sure. […] best not to think too hard about it until we get word from Toei themselves.

ReallyTrustyGuy さん

There’s so much cope from Sentai fans over this, its funny. The series is dying, has little appeal abroad due to the overly childlike nature, and Toei are just looking to cut losses. Sentai as it is, is dead.

do people not know what “cope” means anymore […] only hearsay from news outlets that are known to exaggerate things regardless of how reliable they might be

Thank you for the insight. It sounds like the media is running with just half the story.

“a source familiar with the matter” 🤦‍♂️

yamete-kudasai さん

That means 100% true if you’re into super sentai and their leak culture

dokool さん

That carries a much heavier weight in Japan than it does elsewhere. Especially considering it’s a Kyodo story.

Loved Super Sentai and hated Kamen Rider growing up but kids today prefer Kamen Rider’s dark and edgy tone. I’ll admit that the SS series took a hard fall after Gokairanger. Glad I got a chance to see the live show, it had a good run in pop culture as well.

I liked Kikaida the most!
