Are Japanese consumers turning away from iPhones? Reasons behind the decline in iPhone market share

tl;dr iPhones are expensive

Man if Sony actually supported, marketed, and cared about their phones such as the Xperia (great phones btw, just very expensive), they could at the very least take over the domestic market easily
The only huge barrier for the Xperia is its huge costs

Gosh, I forgot that I had the Xperia several phones ago. It was a good phone in 2014. I didn’t know they still made them.

A Sony phone is my #1 choice but they don’t sell it in my market directly. They’re such good phones.

Tbh customers are not stupid. Sony phones sucks, from camera, performance, battery life, etc. pretty much everything

I’m a Sony consumer: alpha camera/lenses and PS. I was in the market for changing my old iPhone and considered checking the Xperia at their store in Ginza, I didn’t stay there for more than 1 minute. The price is just ridiculous.

My son has had 3 Xperia phones so far. He swears by them.

I got to use an Xperia paid by my employer when I first came here to use before I got a SIM card. Great phone. I don’t know if I’d get one if I were paying for it.

i watch tech tubers each year and the sony phones always seem competitive but they arent sold in many countries from major carriers. i respect them holding onto the headphone jack for so long

Perhaps people are keeping their phones for longer

They’ve also become utter shit in recent years – more software than hardware related

And barely any reason to upgrade if you already have in the last decade

Battery might be one reason. Including planned obsolescence.

If you buy one, yes! With my contract I pay around ¥5000 yen a month for my current 256GB iPhone 16 with an unlimited data plan. I can switch next year to an iPhone 18 with the same specs or even more storage without increasing the fees too much. The only downside is that the phone is not mine and I need to return it when changing/ or buy the phone minus the already paid fees for the phone itself.

Some people I know still using iphone 7 here.
Maybe they just don’t buy new one.
I’m still using 13 mini too.

just to show how good iphone is after all those years

Yeah old iphones are still rocking, It’s amazing how I still get the OS update. Not just security update.
It’s good that android phones also start doing that in the past few years now at least.
Bought 15 pro last time thinking I might need upgrade, but sold it again because it doesn’t seem to really matter. Which is a good thing.

My Japanese Aunt upgraded to a Google Pixel 9a this year. She has used an iPhone since the iPhone 5 days. She told me that the Pixel 9a was 65,000 yen during the Black Friday sales, and she got a 15,000 yen trade-in for an iPhone. She said she had to choose between a 100,000 yen iPhone 16e and a Google Pixel 9a.

The Pixels are great, imo. Been using them for about 6 years now.

Although, I never clicked with Apple products. I’ve had iPhones for work but was never keen.

Pixels are the worst Android by far. Almost completely unusable in Japan.

At least the other OEMs try. Google is awful.

I don’t have any issues and I’ve been a Pixel user since Pixel 5. Any examples of what you find unusable?

Why specifically in Japan? Had no issues here since the Pixel 4.

Staff at my company use personal devices on Intune for work and people with Oppo, OnePlus, and Aquos devices tend to see compatibility issues the most. I guess because they’re not super widespread. But Google and Samsung are generally pretty good.
