EF英語能力指数って?

EF(Education First)という教育系の国際企業が、毎年「英語テストの結果」を集計して発表しています。
EFが提供するオンライン英語テストを受けた数百万人のデータを元にしています。
テスト内容は
リーディング(読む)
リスニング(聞く)
の2つが中心。
その点数を国別に平均して、「この国の人はどれくらい英語ができるか」をスコア化します。

It’ll only keep going down. My school just cut the speaking/presentation course for next year and added another hour of the grammar class.
🤷‍♂️

Lets keep in mind the EF test is based on people that go to their sales offices and take their proficiency test, there’s no wider baseline to schools or anything else. It’s an ad for their language program for a for-profit company whose owner is a billionaire.

One year Taiwan’s EF test scores were so bad that they claimed Taiwan lagged poorly and was the worst among East Asia. It surely had little to do with the fact that they moved offices in Taipei and they had a particularly poor recruiting year. Anyone who has visited Japan and South Korea knows that Taipei is packed full of people that speak English, relatively. Was my first hint to look into this and realizing the truth.

No joke.

The teacher I work with sometimes misunderstands a joke or remark I make as offensive when there is zero offense to be had. I sometimes try to say something a little funny so her students don’t sleep like they usually do. It’s her lack of language skills despite being put in charge of the English lessons that cause this confusion, but it’s me who will probably get reprimanded by the company.

I’ve got to get out of this job… I can’t get my masters then hopefully the doctorate fast enough.

海外のナナシさん

Good luck man! I am grinding to get out too.

海外のナナシさん

I’ve never worked as an ALT but I switched to working in the gaming industry as fast as I could. I would never go back to education.

A student asked me how do I spell tournamento? I said, “Well, I could tell you but then you won’t learn. Why not open that dictionary in your textbook?” I am tired of just giving the answer to students. I don‘t care if the JTE doesn’t like it. I have already checked out mentally from this job.

It also doesn’t help that AI (is Google Translate even considered an AI?) is improving which only makes people less motivated to learn/study if they could utilize such tools anyway.

I am an ALT and I was in a 3 year class in JHS yesterday. The teacher actually told me to wait in the office for 20 minutes before coming to the next class. She wanted to finish the writing assignment without me there because she obviously didn’t like me telling the students in the previous class to not use AI translation and they’re not learning by using it. Also, I told them they should use easier words that they studied. I would point to words and phrases in their writing and they couldn’t read them or even know what they meant. I asked them why were they using words they don’t even know the meaning to. I just couldn’t understand it. I am so fed up with the Japanese education system. I want to quit being an ALT next year and find something different.

Same experience here, minus the part where the teacher snubbed you. Ever since they introduced Chromebooks in class, students will look up words they don’t know and then mostly pick the wrong ones. Instead of looking in their books. But worse yet, they’ll just type the whole Japanese sentence into Google translate and then just write down what comes out. They’ve been repeatedly told not to do it but so many just do it anyway. I’m sick of correcting Google translate. It doesn’t fill in all the implicit gaps in the Japanese in correctly in English so it always sticks out. Teachers in my schools are trying so hard to get the students to cooperate and put in effort but many students just don’t care.

Google translate is vibe code for language.

Japan didn’t just slip in relative terms, either, as the country’s average proficiency index score, 446, was eight points less than the year prior and 42 below the latest report’s global average of 488. Ranked 96th in the world, tied with Afghanistan and down 4 places from last year. The number of passport holders has been steadily dropping over the years, about 17% of the population has one. I wonder if people no longer care to travel abroad nor want to learn the language anymore.

海外のナナシさん

It’s also financials. The Yen has lost against the major currencies, for example 30% against the euro in 5 years. So it’s much more expensive to go abroad than it used to be.

海外のナナシさん

Add to that that everything is a lot more expensive overseas than 5 years ago.

海外のナナシさん

Legitimately, most of my students have no interest in going overseas at all. They think everywhere outside of Japan is too dangerous.

海外のナナシさん

Longer I live in Japan, the more I feel that way too…

海外のナナシさん

That’s just media getting to you. Most places are nowhere near as unsafe as the news wants you to believe. Especially the touristy areas that people are going to.

海外のナナシさん

So true, I tell people this all the time.

海外のナナシさん

I love visiting Japan and it’s super safe for the most part, but the fear mongering here is wild. Most of Europe is stupidly safe too, for example. And I’m from Eastern Europe, for all it matters, which didn’t have the best reputation until the very recent years maybe.

海外のナナシさん

I bet foreigners are to blame…

海外のナナシさん

China is sending its agents to teach English poorly and lower Japanese English levels don’t you know? And Xi would have gotten away with it too if it wasn’t for the meddling Queen of Deer

高市早苗総理のことっぽい、MTGのカードにありそうだよね、鹿の女王

海外のナナシさん

That’s impressive considering there’s a lot more online resources compared to twenty years ago.

海外のナナシさん

The online resources are what’s impeding most of the learning. Why study and memorize words and grammar when you can just google translate everything.
