「すいすい」って言葉から来てるんだ。改札をスムーズに通れるイメージだし、ペンギンが水の中をすいすい泳ぐ感じもある。
キャラデザは坂崎千春さんで、もともと1998年に子ども向け絵本用に作られたんだ。Suicaより3年前で、JR東日本がそれをライセンスしたんだよ。
It’s because of すいすい, “swiftly, smoothly” which is how it lets you pass through the ticket gates and also how a penguin swims through water. Chiharu Sakazaki had created the character for a children’s book in 1998 (three years before Suica’s debut) and JR East licensed it for use on the card.

でも本当にやりきるかどうかは疑わしいね。
正直、PRの仕掛けの一環だと思う。人々が驚いたり話題にしたりして、もうZIPニュースでも特集されてたし。
つまり、メディアに新しい決済システムを宣伝させる作戦ってわけ。
最終的にはペンギンを残して、新カードに「プラス」とかマークをつけるだけな気がする。
No, suica is rebranding to compete with PayPay in 2027. They will support a high balance, QR code, etc. They decided that a new logo, but the same name, is the perfect balance to keep brand recognition and also promote a major change. Will they follow through? I doubt so. The cynic in me think that this is part of a PR stunt. People are surprised and curious about the move and I’ve already seen a segment on Zip News about it and why they are doing it. Essentially getting news programs to advertise their plans for their new payment system. In the end, I think they will keep the penguin and add a “plus” or some mark to the new card.
